The 3 hour wait to fill petrol

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: January 11, 2009

I went to fill petrol in my car on Friday (9th Jan) . That is just the beginning of my ordeal, that lasted for 3 hours. Yes 3 hours to fill half tank.

India was held to ransom by oil company employees this past week, when they went on strike. This strike completely stopped the supply of fuels. And adding to the woes was the transporters strike. This further complicated matters.

So there i was, at 7 on a Friday morning, hunting for petrol (and the fuel gauge was indicating empty). I went to the nearest petrol bunk, it had a big “NO STOCKS” sign. Same with the second and the third and the fourth petrol bunk. After searching all the petrol bunks around a radius of 5 Km from my house, i ran out of petrol while returning home. I had to leave my car and walk home.

After half an hour i go t a message that Shell petrol bunk have fuel. So i ran with a can in my hand to get some petrol, for 2 kilometers. Fortunately, the new stock had just arrived and there were few others in the petrol bunk. After filling the 1 liter can i went back to my car and started towards the Shell petrol bunk to fill the tank. By the time i arrived, the news about the new stock of petrol had spread and there was a mile long queue of vehicles. It took another hour before my turn came. That is when the person at the bunk told me that i can fill only half tank as there is a shortage. Being at the mercy of the bunk guy i had no choice but to obey. I filled half tank petrol and left.

This episode left me fuming mad the Oil Companies . They went on strike to get salary hikes, which was incidentaly hiked during the recent 6th Pay Commision Revision in India. These government sector employees in Oil Companies are earning higher salaries than most private sector senior management. Their greed has lead to an entire nation being held to ransom.

This incident also affirmed my belief that we should move to electric vehicles as soon as possible. At least we will not be held to ransom by the whims and wishes of the Oil Companies.

I do wonder if we can build a low cost all electric vehicle in India. If TATA can build a $3000 car, i believe it is possible to build an all electric vehicle in India. Will post more about this, after i analyze what it will take to create these cars in India and how cheaply they can be made.

Twitter – The river of thoughts, ideas, interests and emotions

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: January 5, 2009

Twitter !!!

Everybody who is anybody seems to be on twitter, at least everybody who is a somebody on the internet.

Its interesting to note that despitef the 140 character limit, people still manage to share information, emote and share their thoughts. Its amazing that human creativity is actually liberated by constraints. I think that is where the saying “necessity is the mother of invention” originated.

Twitter is a novel concept, who would have thought that a service that restricts users would become so successful. The 140 character limit is Twitter’s USP. There is a lot to be learnt from the success of twitter.

  1. Working with constrains helps us focus
  2. Everybody has something to share
  3. A small idea can become really big.

The popularity of twitter has given rise to many applications, developed for the sole purpose of enhancing user experience and trend visualization (a post on all these apps coming up shortly).

As great as Twitter is, it can also be very addictive. Its natural to get sucked into this river of thoughts and loose track of time. Leo Babauta of zen habits captured the pitfalls of twitter addiction and how to use twitter really well in this article. I have one more way to use twitter, “find motivation on twitter”. This post is a result of motivation from a fellow twittizen (thanks @wjhuie).

I do have a wish list of new features and applications for twitter.

  1. A private twitter to dump all my thoughts and links – ya ya, i know that a text document and delicious will do the same, but twitter restricts me to 140 characters and hence refines my thoughts.
  2. A project twitter to have running commentary on collaborative projects and thought sharing on the same.
  3. An application to pull out all the links about a particular topic of interest that people have posted on twitter  – crowd sourcing will probably give refined results, something like Digg. I believe that twitter has a great repository of links, now if only we can have an application to collect them topic wise.
  4. A method to tag some people as favorites, so that its easier to go and check their recent thoughts.

There are many more thoughts, i should probably post them on twitter. :)

So follow me to immerse yourself in a river of random ideas and thoughts 140 characters at a time.

Waking Up at 5am !!!

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: October 14, 2008

A few days ago my colleague and i were discussing Bangalore traffic. Its the most widely discussed topic in Bangalore.

Now, i live around 30 Km away from my office and my colleague stays about 5 Km away. It takes me 90 minutest to commute to office, thats on a good day, and it takes my colleague about 60 minutes !!!!

This was when the discussion veered towards the perfect time to get out of the house to avoid traffic. I leave by 7am to reach by 8:30 (on good days). If 7 is not good enough, may be I should leave by 5, i suggested.

“Leaving by 5 seems like a bit of a stretch, may be you can get up at 5 and leave by 6″, he said.
“what are the benefits ?” , i asked.
“Well you will get to office with out any stress due to the traffic, and you will get some quite time to focus and work till everyone else gets here”, he answered.
“I was asking about the benefits of waking up at 5 ?”

This is the point the discussion went into a long question answer, brainstorming session about the merits of waking up at five. I have listed them below:

  1. You get a lot of time to reflect upon the tasks to accomplish for the day.
  2. You get quite time to meditate, jog or exercise in the morning.
  3. You can catch some overseas customers at that hour. (not my favorite argument)
  4. You can get to office before 6, and get to the gym.
  5. You can write your blog more regularly.

Well, the arguments were good. But what about exhaustion resulting from lack of sleep???
And we launched into another discussion about sleep patterns and creating a routine around waking up at 5 am. The routine as discussed then, is given below

  • Wake up at 5am
  • Start work by 8am
  • Get out of office by 4 pm
  • Have a dinner by 8pm
  • Schedule calls or work for another hour till 9 pm
  • That leaves 1-2 hours before getting to bed. (considering average sleep time of 6-7 hours)

It sounds great. Almost 5-6 hours for life away from work. And time for focused work, because only 8 hours in a day will be available to work.

Perfect!!!

It seems so good that i am going to experiment with this for the next 30 days (thats the time required for new habits to form as i have read online). I will keep posting about the progress, everyday. Hopefully you all will keep me motivated :)

Finance and Investment – Random ramblings

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: August 2, 2008

I have been doing a lot of reading of late. Primarily on the subjects of finance and investing, yup the tax man scared me and robbed me.

One of the books i read was Rich Dad, Poor Dad.  The author gives a lot of sensible advice,  about the necessity for financial education.  The book also has a lot of stuff about liabilities and assets and the importance of building a strong asset column.

After reading the book i pondered, if everyone else has read this book and if others are following the advice, then i will just be another unknown in the crowd. Also i had a lot of questions about where do you get the initial amount for investment, salary is out because it is taxed by the government, and no one can expect to become rich by investing parts of their salary.

Author Robert Kiyosaki’s emphasis is on 2 things, through out the book

  1. Financial education – Begin early and learn throughout your life.
  2. Investment – Do this regularly

Though i do wonder how both these goals can be achieved in the Indian context ? There are lots of millionaires and business women/men in India, but we don’t know how they did it. There is also a dearth of knowledge about the Indian Tax/Finance laws and how to take maximum advantage of them. To satiate my curiosity i did some lazy searches , unfortunately the Indian success story is not well documented. If you know of any book, website or person who can give information about investment in India, please do share it in the comments.

Robert Kiyosaki started a business to sell Velcro Wallets to surfers, this business was an instant hit and provided him with a good sum of money for later investments.
One thing that i did learn from the book , investment is a lot about information and people management as it is about financial education. It is important to know smart people who will help you make the correct decisions. Almost all the billionaires in the world are backed by very smart and dedicated people. These people advice the rich about where to invest and how to invest.

Curious to know more about Finance and investing i read a few blogs. Interestingly, all of them suggested : start a business to make money.

I do wonder though if making money is really that important to live a fulfilling life. It would be enough to say that very few billionaires have a steady relationship in their life.

Then i read another book called “The 4-hour work week” by Timothy Ferriss. This book was a real eye opener. The author says that he is not rich in US but he still lives a life of luxury.

How does he do that ?

He has a nutrition supplement business in the US that generated money. And he spends the money outside US. Most of his work is outsourced to cheaper countries like India. Of course that makes a lot of sense to, since 10$ is 400 Rupees in India.

Timothy Ferriss exploits, smartly and successfully, the currency and cost of living difference in various geographical locations to live a life of luxury on about a 100,000$ per annum.

A common take away from all the books, set up a system to generate money for you. It might be a business or assets.

I am still curious to find out, how can we do this in India. Any thoughts ???

Expertise

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: July 27, 2008

expert (http://definr.com/expert)

n : a person with special knowledge or ability who performs
         skillfully

experts
how important is it to be one.. i wonder
Then i realized that an expert is a person who knows a little more about the subject than you. Thus, if you are discussing about ,lets say, writing a blog, the person who has written a few blogs is an expert over you, if you have never written a blog.

Its as simple as that. of course, this definition has its pitfalls too. The biggest one is, meeting someone who knows more about the subject than you do. In front of that person, all you are saying is just plain bullshit.

I have had the misfortune of interacting with some of these self proclaimed experts. First time i talked to some of these people, i was impressed. But then, i also got curious about the subject. So, i googled the subject and read about it. The more i read, i realized that “the experts” had taken their material from the same place as i was reading. Sad but true.

In the age of internet its really tough to become an expert. Anybody can read what is written on webpages.

So what makes an expert. A college degree? A PhD?
Certainly, all the PhDs are experts in there field. But what happens if the field is different from what you have studied and researched ? Do you still call yourself an expert, because you have a degree ? Many people do, till they are ridiculed by a school kid who has read the same material on the internet.

So that leaves us with couple of challenges.

  1. How do you learn more about a subject in the internet era ?
  2. How do you stay ahead of what is published on the net every second ?

There is no one solution to these solutions. There can be multiple approaches. Some of them are:

  1. Pick a niche area, and learn about the latest happenings in that niche. – Of course the question is how do you choose a niche area ? And isnt it same as studying for a degree? Yup in some ways it is. But then again, no degree is going to make you an expert in areas like “cars and there designs”, “mobile phones and there features” or “the latest super-duper hollywood flick and how it is better than all others”
  2. Do quick micro-experiments in the area of interest – This is easier than most people think it is. You want to know about the latest hollywood flick and the special effects ? Talk to a kid. Then watch the trailers of the movies. Simple.

Of course it takes hands on experience for you to comment about your personal experience in any area. i think micro-experiments are a great way to do that.

Do you have any better way of learning new things, staying ahead of most of the crowd and being an expert? Share them with me, i will be glad to hear about them. :)

Friends and Friendship

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: July 7, 2008

friend
(http://definr.com/friend)

n : a person you know well and regard with affection and trust

friendship (http://definr.com/friendship)

n : the state of being friends [syn: friendly relationship]

In ancient times, a woman by the name of Pandora had been gifted a large box by Zeus – the King of Gods in Greek Mythology. Zeus instructed Pandora to never open the box. Pandora, being just human was also curious, and ultimately opened the box to take a peek. Her curiosity released all of the evils of mankind trapped in the box, although Pandora was quick enough to close it again and keep one value inside- Hope.

The story continues…

Hope, all alone and feeling lonely in the box, prayed to Zeus for freedom. Zeus didn’t grant Hope’s wishes, but transferred her from the box into the human heart. Friends are the incarnation of Hope.

A Friend :

  • Always desires the best for you.
  • Listens
  • Is honest with you, always
  • Understands
“Have no friends not equal to yourself.”
- Confucious (551 – 497 BC) Chinese philosopher.
“Fate chooses your relations, you choose your friends.”
- Jacques Delille (1738 – 1813) French poet.

“It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

In the rush of modern life, sometimes we forget our friends. As observed by CS Lewis ,in his The Four Loves, friendships are not what they used to be

“To the Ancients, Friendship seemed the happiest and most fully human of all loves; the crown of life and the school of virtue. The modern world, in comparison, ignores it. We admit of course that besides a wife and family a man needs a few ‘friends’. But the very tone of the admission, and the sort of acquaintanceships which those who make it would describe as ‘friendships’, show clearly that what they are talking about has very little to do with that Philia which Aristotle classified among the virtues or that Amicitia on which Cicero wrote a book.”

But then again, friendship is made of much stronger stuff than time can erode.

To all my friends

“My dear Friend if you are reading this, know that i cherish our friendship. You gave me the best and the most beautiful moments of my life. I still admire your patience to put up with me for hours and to put a smile on my face.”

Think of all the friends you have, how did you come to be friends (leave a comment for the wackiest instance) ?

If you have read this post till here, congratulations, it ends here :)

Blabberus Mouthucus

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: July 2, 2008

Blabberus Mouthucus
n : A genus of aliens who have far superior powers to gossip indiscreetly .

Some people can talk…i mean talk, and talk, and talk for hours together. And that too without any topic.
Its an amazing skill.
I am generally left open mouthed and gaping at them, whenever i meet such people…. Of course i come across as a retard to most of this hyper talkers.

I always thought it was an art, talking non-stop for hours together. But then i discovered that they are not people, they are aliens, beings with far superior powers than ordinary mortals. Curious to know about their behavior pattern, i did a “lot” of research.

Just like other animals there are various species of these aliens called “Blabberus Mouthucus”. Given below are the most commonly found varieties.

  1. Knowitallosorus : A rather nagging and annoying species, usually older than 30, consider themselves to be experts at everything and anything. They are always on the prowl for a scent of conversation. Favorite method of cornering a prey is by cutting in the middle of a conversation with an expert opinion. If cornered by one, try not to make eye contact, look at your watch repeatedly and in general act as if you are going to miss a flight.
  2. Hyperactivetaletellucus: A fun to watch species. They talk about something they are passionate about and gesticulate like a clown on caffeine. Good entertainment if you are not the victim. If cornered by one, imitate their gestures, its considered a sign of submission. And if you are a good imitator, you will be spared in half an hour to one hour.
  3. TattletaleVampirus: The most dangerous one of the Blabberus Mouthucus. They talk because they can. There is no reason, no topic and generally no end in sight if cornered. If you are a victim, consider yourself to be lucky, if you come out of it feeling brain dead.

More information about these creatures who sap your energy and time, and provide a lot of entertainment, will be posted as and when my research progresses.

Birthdays

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: July 2, 2008

Birthdays are special occasions..for friends and families.
Its the day we overcame that first challenge of getting out of our mother’s womb and into her arms.
Every year that passes by adds so much to us, hair , teeth, a personality (optional for some) and we in turn add so much to the world around us, joy, laughter, a sense of belonging.

Remember when you turned 6 years old. Your father must be thinking, “what a brat, how did i make this mistake?” And your mother will be thinking, “Aaaww, My angel”. I guess mothers always think that, even when you turn 25.
So, you are all of six years old and want to take on the world. May be become a doctor, a Pilot, a musician, Barbie doll, a princess, superman (i wanted to be!!!) or a train driver. Nothing is impossible when you are six years old. You are never embarrassed to ask questions, or make new friends. Everything is cool for a six year old, you just want to know, how? why? what? when? to the annoyance of many. But as a six year old you never bothered what others think about you.

Then one fine day you turn 10, then 15, then 20 and that ugly thing called “reality” kicks in. We become conscious of others and their opinions. Education makes retards out of us, by teaching whats “proper” and what not. Then comes an even uglier thing called “responsibilities”. Do i need to continue…. i guess not, its getting very depressing as it is..

To all the people who influence my life and gave me some great moments to cherish, and who celebrated their birthday recently, Wish you A Happy Birthday Again!!!

Shakthi
Farha
Shikha
Gaurav
Aditi
Manu
DJ…

Rock on…. I wish you never grow older than six, in your hearts.

Social Media – Information Overload

Posted by: anoopmk112 on: June 28, 2008

I sometimes feel that the amount of information going around on the web is too much. Everyday we hear about a new social media site taking birth online

There is Twitter, Facebook, Orkut, My Space and what not.
Everybody seems to be getting into “lets make the web social” bandwagon.

At some level i think it is important for the companies to engage people in this manner. I wonder though, is it a sustainable business model. And more than that, how many people will actually keep logging into these services.

As if the social web was not enough, there is also RSS feed, instant updates on news sites and emails to deal with. Information OVERLOOOAAAAAAADDDDD!!!!!!!

I feel its unnecessary to actually try and keep abreast with all the information out there. The old and tested method of specialize in one field and forget the rest seems like the best answer to information overload.

After all, i can keep in touch with only so many people at any given point in time.

Presently i am on Orkut, Twitter and Facebook. I guess i will stop using Facebook, due to all the useless applications and ads.
